In Faith

last night it was dark,
lonely black around me,
I lay curled up,
and that's how you found me

soft, you said, quiet,
not cold or despair,
but I know what I saw--
you, too, were there

all the people, I said,
living--loving--lying
see, it's all useless,
no point now in trying

oh, no, you told me,
don't just give in;
when you lose hope,
that's when they win

but how do I live, then,
watching everyone leave?
you smiled and held me,
said, you have to believe

okay, I responded,
I believe in you,
and then you answered,
what more could you do?
